ROME - At least 50 000 victims of trafficking and exploitation in Italy have received protection, assistance and at least one first aid between 2000 and 2008. Among these there are also children, nearly a thousand. The annual report by Save the Children on the''new slavery''confirms the seriousness of a phenomenon in the world estimated 2.7 million victims (80% women and girls) and 32 billion as turnover.
In our country, victims of trafficking and exploitation, including sexual, - according to the Ministry for Equal Opportunities - come mostly from Nigeria, Romania, Moldova, Albania, Ukraine. Over 5 thousand suspects for reducing or holding in slavery and the crime of trafficking in persons.
The report notes that 4,466 unaccompanied foreign minors in Italy, those followed by the same 2500 Save the children between 2009 and 2010. Afghan, Bangladeshi and Egyptian nationalities Romanians more relevant. The arrivals of foreign victims are made with the plane, which implies a higher debt to be repaid, while we continue on the road to intercept the girls arrived in Italy by sea, in Sicily and then being displaced throughout the country, to example, in Turin, Milan, Naples or on the Adriatic coast.

For Afghan children, who make a long and dangerous journey to Italy, our country is more transit to Northern Europe that target, it is estimated that to reach Italy illegally in Norway is the cost of 2500 €. To obtain the money needed minors Afghans usually rely on parents or relatives who pay smugglers with the system of hawala (money transfer takes place outside the banking system, based on a network of dealers and trust). The problems begin when families no longer have the money and the guy is half the journey. He finds himself at the mercy of the trafficker as well as having control over his movements, may force him to work to pay off the debt incurred and not paid by the parents.
